Once your Emirates ID application is submitted, the waiting begins. Most applications process in 5 to 10 working days, but a small percentage get stuck — flagged for biometric verification, name mismatch with the passport, or a security review. The good news is you do not need to call anyone or visit an ICP centre to check status. There are three reliable ways to track your Emirates ID application in 2026: the ICP website, the ICP UAE app, and SMS. This guide walks through each, explains every status code you might see, and tells you exactly what to do if your application is stuck.

  • The fastest method is the ICP UAE app under My Services then Status Check.
  • You need your PRAN (also called the transaction number) from the typing centre receipt or your submission SMS.
  • Standard processing takes 5 to 10 working days. New residents may need to attend biometrics first.
  • If the status sits at Under process for more than 10 working days, you can escalate.
  • The card is delivered by Emirates Post to the address on the application.

What you need before checking

You need one of: the PRAN (a 14-digit Personal Reference Application Number on your typing centre receipt), your application number, your Emirates ID number for renewals, or your passport number as a fallback. If you cannot find any of these, check the SMS history on the phone number you provided. ICP sends a confirmation SMS with the reference at submission.

Method 1: ICP website

Open icp.gov.ae in any browser. Go to Services, then Public Services, then Check Your Status. Choose Emirates ID as the service type, enter your PRAN or application number, pass the captcha, and tap Search. The current status appears immediately. If it shows Under process for more than 10 working days, scroll down for a sub-line explaining whether biometrics are pending, fees are unpaid, or a document is missing.

Download ICP UAE from the App Store or Google Play. The publisher is the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security. Sign in with UAE PASS, then tap My Services and ID Card Status. Status appears with full history showing when it moved from Submitted to Under process to Approved to Card printed to Dispatched.

The app sends push notifications when status changes. If you do nothing else, install the app. You will find out about issues faster than refreshing the website.

Method 3: SMS check

For Etisalat and Du customers, send the text EID followed by a space and your application number to 2535. You will receive a reply with the current status, usually within 30 seconds.

What each status means

  • Submitted. Application received, not yet picked up. Wait — usually moves within 24 hours.
  • Under process. ICP is reviewing. Standard for up to 10 working days.
  • Biometrics required. You need to attend an ICP centre. Book through the app.
  • Documents required. Something is missing. Log in and upload what is requested.
  • Approved. Card is being printed. Usually 2 to 3 days.
  • Card printed. Physical card is with Emirates Post. Wait for delivery or arrange pickup.
  • Dispatched. Card is on the way. Track via Emirates Post.
  • Delivered. Card received.
  • Returned to sender. Delivery failed. Pick up from the relevant post office within 30 days.
  • Rejected. Reasons should be listed. Common: name mismatch with passport, expired passport, failed security check.

What to do if the application is stuck

Step 1: Re-check biometrics

The most common stuck-state is unscheduled biometrics. Even if you submitted online, ICP may flag the application for in-person capture. Log in to the ICP app, check the status detail, and book biometrics at your nearest ICP centre.

Step 2: Call the ICP call centre

Dial 600 522222. Open Sunday to Thursday 7 AM to 9 PM, Saturday 8 AM to 5 PM. Give your application number. They can see exactly what is blocking the application.

Step 3: Visit a Customer Happiness Centre

If the call centre cannot unblock it, visit an ICP Customer Happiness Centre in your emirate. Walk-in, no appointment usually needed. Bring your passport, application receipt, and a screenshot of the stuck status.

Step 4: Employer PRO escalation

If your employer’s PRO handled the application, ask them to escalate. PROs have priority lines into ICP for employer-sponsored applications and can usually resolve in one to two working days.

Common reasons applications get stuck

  • Name mismatch with passport. The name on the EID must match the passport exactly. A missing middle name or different transliteration flags the application.
  • Passport expiry under 6 months. ICP rejects applications when the passport is close to expiring. Renew first.
  • Photo not meeting specs. White background, neutral expression, both ears visible, no glasses for some categories.
  • Unpaid fees. Some applications pause if the fee transaction did not clear. Re-attempt payment.
  • Security check. A small percentage of applications get a random security flag. No way to expedite, just wait.

How to receive your card

Emirates Post delivery is the default. Track via emiratespost.ae using the tracking number from the dispatch SMS. If delivery fails twice, the card returns to the nearest post office and stays there for 30 days. After 30 days, ICP cancels the card and you must reapply. You can also pick up from the post office — bring your passport.

Career and employment in the Gulf region

You can choose Emirates ID pickup at an ICP centre during the application if you want to avoid postal delivery.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does Emirates ID take to be issued?

Standard processing is 5 to 10 working days. Renewals can be faster at 2 to 3 days. Stuck applications can take 3 to 4 weeks if biometrics or security review are involved.

Can I work in the UAE before my Emirates ID is issued?

You can legally work as soon as your labour card is issued by MOHRE. Emirates ID is a separate document that follows. Most employers are fine with you starting before the physical EID card arrives, as long as the EID number has been issued.

My Emirates ID expired and I have not renewed. What happens?

Renew within 30 days of expiry to avoid the AED 20 per day late fee (capped at AED 1,000). Beyond 90 days, your residence is at risk of cancellation.

Can I get a digital Emirates ID instead of the physical card?

UAE PASS shows your digital Emirates ID and is accepted at most government counters. Some private services like banks and telecom shops still require the physical card.

Can someone else collect my Emirates ID from the post office?

Yes, but they need a notarised power of attorney plus a copy of your original passport. Easier to redirect to a pickup point you can reach yourself.
